Life before Nala, my 2 year old psychiatric assistance dog was very hard. In 2021 I spent a total of 8.5 months on a psychiatric hospital/s and my mental health was an all time low. I didn’t leave the house and barely spoke to friends and couldn’t do simple things like go to the shops or pick up prescriptions.
Having Nala in my life now has changed it massively. I can attend family events and appointments independently with the help of Nala. I go out everyday to make sure she has at least an hour of exercise and enrichment and I’m up early every morning instead of sleeping in.
My biggest accomplishment has probably got to be getting Nala to a passing stage of her assistance dog work. To get her to that point I was out almost everyday training consistently which I’m still doing now, something I never would have done if I didn’t have her. I also have hit milestones in my recovery which never would have been possible.
Canine allies have not only helped us with training and making sure every detail, and command/alert is on point. Ensuring I understand what is expected and needed. They have also introduced me to an amazing community of people in a similar situation, where our dogs come first and we all help each other out, a support network I wouldn’t have found anywhere else.
The attention to training and communication I have with canine allies is amazing and I’m so grateful to be part of this amazing community. ''
